About the Event

The Emily Carr String Quartet is excited to present Different Trains: A Tribute to the Kronos Quartet. Selections from some of their favourite Kronos Quartet recordings will be performed: Fratres by Arvo Pärt, Four for Tango by Astor Piazzolla, arrangements by Osvaldo Golijov of music from Portugal, Mexico and Argentina and Different Trains by Steve Reich. The quartet will also be premiering a string quartet called Beloved of the Sky by composer and pianist, Iman Habibi.

Steve Reich’s Grammy Award-winning work for amplified string quartet and tape, Different Trains, takes us on a journey across America and Europe reflecting on the experience of being Jewish during and after the Holocaust. The quartet will mimic “speech” patterns while the sounds of American and European trains and sirens are heard over recorded interviews of survivors of the Holocaust. A truly unique and intriguing experience not to be missed.

The World Premiere by Iman Habibi of Beloved of the Sky, inspired by the work of Emily Carr, was originally written for the Emily Carr String Quartet, who joined the composer in 2014 for a residency at ArtSpring on Salt Spring Island to workshop and develop the piece. The work- in-progress was workshopped further by JACK Quartet and Calidore String Quartet.
