The Seven Last Words of Christ
About the Event
The Emily Carr String Quartet perform as part of a concert series celebrating the 125th anniversary of St. Andrew’s Cathedral. The concert will feature “The Seven Last words of Christ” by Joseph Haydn. “The Seven Last Words of Christ” consists of seven sonatas plus an introduction and were meant to express and comment on the seven last statements of Christ as he was dying on the cross, as recorded in scripture. Immediately after it was first performed, the work was widely praised for its great intensity and reverence. The first version was originally written for string orchestra and in 1796 Haydn reworked it into a version for string quartet and later as an oratorio.
