The concert will feature "The Seven Last words of Christ" by Joseph Haydn. "The Seven Last Words of Christ" consists of seven sonatas plus an introduction and were meant to express and comment on the seven last statements of Christ as he was dying on the cross, as recorded in scripture. Immediately after it was first performed, the work was widely praised for its great intensity and reverence. "A Spirit Indomitable" is a concert of music by Canadian women composers, marking the hundredth anniversary of the granting of women's suffrage in British Columbia. Saturday, 2:00pm. The Emily Carr String Quartet perform as part of a concert series celebrating the 125th anniversary of St. Andrew's Cathedral. The concert will feature "The Seven Last words of Christ" by Joseph Haydn. "The Seven Last Words of Christ" consists of seven sonatas plus an introduction and were meant to express and comment on the seven last statements of Christ as he was dying on the cross, as recorded in scripture. Immediately after it was first performed, the work was widely praised for its great intensity and reverence. The first version was originally written for string orchestra and in 1796 Haydn reworked it into a version for string quartet and later as an oratorio.

CBC Radio, in partnership with the Victoria Conservatory of Music, presents "Why Music Works" a special edition of North By Northwest. The Emily Carr String Quartet (ECSQ) is the house band as host Sheryl MacKay joins music presenter June Goldsmith for a morning of laughs, listening and learning about the life and times of the great composer.
In the first part of the show MacKay and Goldsmith explore Haydn's fascinating life. In the second part using Opus 71 #2 in D Major, Goldsmith and the ECSQ dissect and discuss what makes it work, followed by a full performance of the piece.
